Credit crunch forces disposal of castle

Owing to unforeseen economic conditions, the Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings has had to dispose of a castle in its custody.  The new proprietor is assisting with the protection of the building, however the Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings will retain legal responsibillity for the ruin and is leasing the castle to maintain its interest in the building's future.

Plans to preserve Castle agreed

The Stewart Milne Group and The Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings have now concluded an Heritage Management Agreement for the preservation of Ballumbie Castle.  The Heritage Management Agreement makes provisions for the consolidation of the Castle and for the maintenance of the site.

Society discussing Ballumbie Castle in Angus

Further to recent talks with the Stewart Milne Group, the Society is interested in securing the consolidation of Ballumbie Castle and hopes to work towards the building's eventual reuse for the benefit of the local community.

Llantwit Major Castle's status as a monument of national importance is affirmed

While disappointed that its offer to purchase Llantwit Major Castle in Glamorgan has been declined by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings is glad to see the council formally assert the Castle's "recognised status as a monument of national importance".  Particularly pleasing was the Council's announcement of its "aim" in regard to "the retention of the site in public ownership".  The Vale of Glamorgan Council confirmed that a resurvey of the ruins will take place "to enable the Council to be better informed regarding their current condition together with the cost of future repair."  This is taken to be an assertion of the Council's intention to undertake such repair works, which we endorse wholeheartedly.

Talks entered about Ballumbie Castle, Angus

Talks have been entered into with the Stewart Milne Group in relation to Ballumbie Castle, Angus.  Ballumbie is an ancient Scottish castle, known for its association with Henry Lovell of Ballumbie, which was converted into the stable block of Ballumbie House in the early nineteenth century.

Society to make offer for haunted Castle in Wales

Further to ongoing concerns over the future of Llantwit Major Castle in Glamorgan, The Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings has resolved to make an offer to the Vale of Glamorgan Council for the ruins.  Llantwit is known to be in a state of disrepair and is in need of key consolidation works in order to prevent further decay of the structure.  The Castle is a significant Grade 2 property, particularly important for its popularity with local storytelling groups who recount the tales of the Castle's haunted past.

Society in discussions with the Dunecht Estate regarding Cluny Crichton Castle

The Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings has been in communication with the Dunecht Estate over its concerns with the condition of Cluny Crichton Castle.  The Castle, built in 1666, is heavily ruinous and is in need of careful supervision to avoid further deterioration.  While it is thought that any offer to purchase the ruins would be unsuccessful, the Society hopes its pressure will encourage the Estate to maintain the site or to consider its sale as in the best interests for the preservation of the Castle.

Society merges with ruin conservation group

On 15 October 2007 Ruins on the Roam Limited adopted the name and the assets of The Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings, becoming The Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings Limited.

This merger has been established to drive cost efficiency within the two organisations, which share similar goals.  A review of the Society's assets will be undertaken and it is thought that any surplus holdings will be disposed of.

Ruins on the Roam Limited is a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of historic buildings, including historical monuments, ruins, ancient buildings, and redundant churches.  It is thought that the streamlined, merged institution will be able to offer enhanced support to help to preserve buildings at risk.

Media enquiries regarding the merger should be addressed to the Manager.
