The Society for the Preservation of Historic Buildings was founded initially as a pressure group working
against individual bids to demolish historic buildings of cultural and architectural importance.
The Society later resolved to take buildings of historical significance into its own custody to preserve and conserve them.
The present-day organisation is dedicated to working to save some of the UK's finest architecture, which regularly comes
under risk owing to neglect or the threat of development.
